Relationships between older people are a topic rarely examined in the youth-oriented genre of LGBTQ+ films. They need to be seen.”

Twilight’s Kiss was first introduced as Suk Suk Cantonese for “uncle”, both in the familial sense and as an honorific for older men – at the 24th Busan International Film Festival.

By looking back, we can also be more free, open, and celebrate our lives today. In the movie, he reenacts his appearance at Hong Kong’s legislative council, pleading to allow gay elders to “live out [their] twilight years with dignity and freedom”.

“I was so touched by [Wai-Keung’s] speech that I had to include it into the film,” says Yeung.

I hope this film will ignite people’s torches to go on to fight for those freedoms and celebrate those who came before us, but also celebrate what we have now. They bring out the wise fool in each person, and they provide a basis for experiencing wholeness within ourselves. They also teach us a lot about gay cultural history and politics.

I can’t remember the last time I’ve seen any film, gay or straight, that focused on senior romance. “He said he was overwhelmed,” says Yeung. In the context of my own “May-December” couplings, I have become more familiar with the horrors of living through the AIDS epidemic from people who saw many of their friends and family die as a result. The new documentary from Emmy-winning actor and producer David Millbern, 100 Years of Men in Love: The Accidental Collection showcases intimate vintage photos of gay men who had the courage to celebrate their love and authenticity, long before LGBTQ rights or marriage equality was even thought of.

I couldn’t be happier. He says, “We wouldn’t be where we are today without what these men have gone through. For many of these men, going to a nursing home means going back into the closet.”

The film has been a success on the festival circuit and bolstered the careers of its lead actors. Denny is also the Senior Lifestyle Writer for South Florida's OutClique Magazine and a contributing writer for Instinct Magazine.

After a second chance meeting, the two men start opening up, commiserating about being stifled by their families and swapping stories about their granddaughters.

That sent me on the journey to contact Neal and Hugh, saying, “I feel like your collection could make an amazing documentary.”

Sure enough, they said, “Let’s go for it.” With their blessing, they gave me 3,700 photos to look through and compile into what I think is a very hard hitting, impactful, and joyful collection of love and companionship.

I had never been with another man sexually before then. Publicly professing my love for older men is just one of them.

No country for old gay men: Twilight’s Kiss by director Ray Yeung imagines two men already in their formative years and getting another chance at love

“To survive, they’ve had to ignore who they are,” says director Ray Yeung about the older gay men of Hong Kong, the subject of his latest film, Twilight’s Kiss.

For a long time, the future was inconceivable for gay men.

And, in the Chinese-speaking world, gay representation is still sorely lacking (LGBTQ+ content being suppressed in China and Malaysia), and stories about the love between two grandparents are virtually non-existent.

One of the men Yeung interviewed for the film cried when he saw it. It benefited the Los Angeles LGBT Center, so Here TV bought out the entire audience, sold tickets, and gave the money to the center as a donation.

People are loving it, savoring it, and they understand the intent, authenticity, and our drive to expose this commitment and love. I was terrified.
